Program Description

It recommended that you consider an educational plan to facilitate your implementation of INTERCEPT® Blood System treated (pathogen reduced, psoralen treated) platelets. The educational program is typically divided into 3 staff groups:

  • Inpatient and Outpatient Nursing
  • Physician Staff including ER, OR and Anesthesia
  • Blood Bank Staff and Lab Generalists

Nursing Education

Key considerations include:

  • Review project and the upcoming use of INTERCEPT® or psoralen treated platelets with Nursing Education leadership
  • Determine educational requirements and schedule for in-person or remote learning
  • Customize information on downloadable educational templates

Physician Education

Key considerations include:

  • Review project and the upcoming use of INTERCEPT® or psoralen treated platelets in all areas of the hospital that use platelets routinely
  • Schedule information presentations for physicians as required.
  • Policy updates regarding the use and labeling requirements for psoralen treated platelets for CMV mitigation

Blood Bank and Laboratory Staff Education

Key considerations include:

  • Review project and the upcoming use of INTERCEPT® or psoralen treated platelets that will be received and distributed from the Blood Bank
  • Schedule information presentations with or without P.A.C.E. credits prior to the start date for INTERCEPT® or psoralen treated platelets
  • Download educational resources as indicated

Many of onboarding steps can be done concurrently to shorten the implementation time frame. Upon completion of the implementation steps outlined in this module series, there is no further work to do for the use of INTERCEPT® platelets at your hospital.

We are here to help. The information reviewed in this module series is also available in our hospital implementation guide.

The Cerus Hospital Affairs team has experience with hundreds of hospitals in onboarding INTERCEPT® platelets. A member of this team is available to provide the support you need.

Once you have reviewed the implementation support materials in this module series and would like further assistance, please email us at hospitalsupport@cerus.com for help with any part of the INTERCEPT® onboarding process.
